Are You Struggling With Sleep?

Sleep Apnea & Snoring

Snoring and poor sleep are more than just inconveniences—they’re often signs of a deeper issue.

Common symptoms include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Waking up tired
  • Dry mouth in the morning
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating

5 Signs You Might Have Sleep Apnea That You Haven't Considered

  1. You Snore — But Not the Way You Think

Most people associate sleep apnea with constant, thunderous snoring. But the reality is more nuanced. Irregular snoring — punctuated by sudden silences, gasping, or choking sounds — is often a more telling sign. These pauses happen when the airway temporarily closes off, forcing your body to rouse itself just enough to breathe again. Your partner may notice it before you do.

  1. You’re Exhausted No Matter How Much You Sleep

If you’re waking up after a full night and still feel like you haven’t rested, your sleep may not be as restorative as it seems. Sleep apnea fragments your sleep architecture — the deeper, more restorative stages of sleep are repeatedly interrupted by micro-arousals your brain triggers to restore breathing. The result is chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and a mental fog that follows you through the day.

  1. Your Mouth and Throat Feel Dry Every Morning

Waking up with a parched mouth or a scratchy, irritated throat is a common but frequently overlooked sign. When your airway is obstructed during sleep, your body often compensates by shifting to mouth breathing — which dries out the soft tissues of your mouth and throat overnight. This is one of the simplest and most consistent early indicators.

  1. Your Blood Pressure Is Harder to Control Than It Should Be

Untreated sleep apnea is one of the most common but underappreciated contributors to high blood pressure. Each apnea event triggers a brief stress response — your heart rate spikes, your blood pressure rises, and your nervous system activates. Over months and years, this cycle takes a real toll on cardiovascular health. If your blood pressure has been difficult to manage despite medication or lifestyle changes, sleep apnea deserves a closer look.

  1. Your Child Snores, Struggles in School, or Seems Unusually Restless

Sleep apnea in children often presents very differently than in adults. Rather than daytime sleepiness, children with disordered breathing during sleep may show behavioral changes, difficulty focusing, hyperactivity, or declining academic performance. Mouth breathing, snoring, and enlarged tonsils or adenoids are worth evaluating — especially when other explanations don’t seem to fit.

How Sleep Apnea is Diagnosed

Getting a Diagnosis: What to Expect

Sleep apnea cannot be diagnosed based on symptoms alone — a sleep study is required, and it must be ordered by a physician. The good news is that the process has become significantly more accessible in recent years.

In-Lab Sleep Study (Polysomnogram)

This is the most comprehensive option. You spend a night at a sleep center, where a full range of physiological data is recorded — including brain activity, oxygen levels, heart rate, breathing patterns, and body movement. It provides the most detailed picture of what is happening while you sleep and is often recommended for complex cases.

Home Sleep Test

For many patients, a home sleep test is the first step — and increasingly, it is all that is needed for an accurate diagnosis. A small, portable device measures key indicators like airflow, oxygen saturation, and breathing effort from the comfort of your own bed. Insurance providers frequently require a home study before authorizing an in-lab test, and the technology has improved dramatically over recent years.

At HEAL, we work closely with each patient and their physician to determine which type of study makes the most sense given their symptoms, history, and insurance coverage. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, we can begin building a treatment plan that addresses the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Personalized Testing & Treatment

Personalized Sleep Apnea Testing and Treatment

At HEAL: Center for TMJ and Sleep, our New Jersey team works with each patient to understand what is driving their sleep disruption and build a treatment approach tailored to their specific diagnosis, anatomy, and goals. No two patients are the same — and your care should reflect that.

Custom Oral Appliances

For patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, a custom oral appliance is often the most effective and well-tolerated solution. These precision-fitted devices gently reposition the lower jaw and tongue to keep the airway open throughout the night. Patients consistently report high comfort levels and significantly better compliance compared to other treatment options — making them one of the most practical long-term solutions available.

Myofunctional Therapy

The muscles of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and throat play a direct role in airway stability during sleep. Myofunctional therapy uses targeted exercises to retrain and strengthen these muscles, addressing patterns like mouth breathing, low tongue posture, and forward head position that contribute to airway collapse. It is an important adjunct to appliance therapy and can produce meaningful, lasting changes in airway function.

Advanced Options for Complex Cases

For patients whose needs fall outside the scope of conservative care, we coordinate with appropriate specialists to explore advanced treatment pathways. Our goal is always to ensure you have access to the right level of care for your specific situation.
