TMJ Orthotic Therapy
The jaw and the head are closely connected — and a misaligned or compressed TMJ can create muscle spasm and nerve irritation that radiates directly into headache and migraine territory. Custom orthotics and jaw repositioning techniques work to decompress the joint, relax the surrounding musculature, and reduce strain on the nerves that contribute to head pain. For many patients, addressing bite alignment produces meaningful and lasting headache relief.
Trigger Point Injections
Trigger points are tight, hyperirritable knots within a muscle that don’t just cause localized discomfort — they refer pain to other areas of the head, face, and neck in predictable patterns. Many patients are surprised to learn that what feels like a migraine may actually be referred pain originating from trigger points in the jaw, temples, neck, or shoulders. By injecting these specific points with a small amount of anesthetic, we can interrupt the pain referral pattern, relax the affected muscle, and provide significant relief — often immediately. Trigger point injections are a highly targeted option for patients whose headaches have a muscular component.
Sphenopalatine Ganglion (SPG) Nerve Block
The sphenopalatine ganglion is a cluster of nerves located behind the nose, connected to the areas of the brain responsible for pain perception. When overactive, it can contribute to migraines, cluster headaches, and facial pain. An SPG block calms this nerve cluster by gently delivering a local anesthetic through the nasal passages using a soft applicator — no needles, no surgery, and no general anesthesia required. The procedure takes only a few minutes and can be performed right in our office.
Most patients notice relief within 24 hours, and the effects can be long-lasting. Some patients experience a significant reduction in both the frequency and severity of future headaches, and in some cases migraines resolve considerably after treatment.
Side effects are minimal and temporary, and may include mild sinus pressure, slight dizziness, or temporary discomfort near the nasal passages — all of which typically resolve within a few days.
Why choose SPG block over other options?
- Fast-acting relief with no needles or long-term medication
- Performed in-office with no hospital stay or overnight recovery
- Minimal recovery time — most patients return to normal activities within a day or two
- A strong option for patients who prefer to avoid or reduce reliance on prescription medications
